The basics

What is Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLT)?

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLT) closes a leaking main vein, usually the great or small saphenous vein, from the inside. Once closed, the vein can no longer leak blood backward into the varicose veins.1

Laser and radiofrequency ablation work the same way, using heat through a catheter. Dr. Malik recommends the one that fits your veins.

Who it is for

  • Leaking (refluxing) great or small saphenous veins on ultrasound1
  • Aching, heavy or swollen legs from varicose veins1
  • Varicose veins that come back from a leaking main vein1
  • People who want an in-office option instead of vein stripping1

Not sure if this is right for you? A visit with Dr. Malik, with an on-site ultrasound, gives you a clear answer.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers. For your own situation, talk to Dr. Malik.

What is EVLT?

Endovenous laser ablation uses laser energy through a thin catheter to close a leaking main vein from the inside.

Is EVLT done in the hospital?

No. Vein ablation is done in the vascular surgeon’s office.

Laser or radiofrequency: which is better?

Both use heat through a catheter to close the vein. Dr. Malik recommends the option that fits your veins after an ultrasound.

What happens after EVLT?

You wear a compression stocking or bandage and walk out the same day.

Will my varicose veins go away?

Closing the leaking main vein treats the cause. Bulging surface veins may also need phlebectomy or sclerotherapy.

Is EVLT covered by insurance?

It is often covered when veins cause symptoms. Our team checks your plan first.
